Ponder是衡量，字根ponder的來源是重量。Ponder直譯就是秤重。跟中文一樣，「衡量」的「衡」原來也是也是秤的意思。Ponder這個字根也用在Pound，Pound是磅，是重量的單位。Pound也是英鎊，現在是一種貨幣，原來是一磅的銀子的意思，現在當然已經跟銀的重量無關了。

despicable 可鄙的,卑劣的
despicable是可鄙的,卑劣的，這個字在電影despicable me上映前，其實沒有這麼常看到。
despicable的字根與despise相同，-spi是看的意思，de-有向下的意思，despise變成向下看，就是鄙視。在中文跟英文中都一樣，仰望表示尊敬，看低就是輕視。所以A looks down on B就是A看不起B。despicable直譯就是可以輕視的，引申為可鄙的。
-spi這個字根也有用到spy這個字上，spy就是一直看，通常是不懷好意的看。但是spy out就是尋找，本身沒有負面的意思。

Translate 轉變
Translate一般我們用做翻譯，但是也有轉變的意思。例如translate idea into action是將想法轉化成做法。轉變是及物動詞，用法是[某人] translates [A物] into [B物]。此時translate的同義字包括convert及transform。
Translate into如果作不及物動詞時，轉變就有導致的意思。通常是[A物] translates into [B物]。此時我們解讀為[A物]導致[B物]的發生。例如：
He believes that active managers aren't as good at this as they claim, and their caution translates into muted g ains for investors in good times. - Barron Magazine 20141020
這句中的muted是被消音的，引申為減少的，這個也是個有趣的說法。

boomerang 迴旋鏢
boomerang是澳洲原住民用的那種迴旋鏢。常被拿來做反作用(與backfire相同)或是原到回點的意思。舉例來說：<Gold also boomeranged on central banks trying to diversify away from the U.S. dollar. >(Bloomberg News 2013/8/11)。這裡的boomerang就是在談金價回到的原狀或是往反方向移動。
跟回到原點有關的說法還有：rebound，bounce back等。The ball bounced back from the wall.就是球從壁上彈回來。rebound也是彈回的意思。在籃球上，我們也常說rebound，中文稱籃板球，英文就是彈回球的意思。

indemnify 免於傷害
indemnify是使某人免受傷害或損害的意思。常用在法律文件當中。indemnify也有賠償的意思，如果你受到了損害，賠償你一些錢，當然就是使你免於傷害的方式。
indemnify後頭常接的是for或against。舉例來說：
The contract indemnifies him against loss of earnings.
或是
We moved quickly, and the House approved an appropriation of $60,000 to indemnify Hamilton Jordan for his legal fees. —Tip O'Neill in Man of the House, 1987
demn這個字根是傷害，相關的字包括：damage(損害), condemn(責怪)。in-是不會的意思，因此indemnify就是讓人不受損害。condemn被用在心理上的傷害，造成人家心裡上的損害，是一種責怪。

recoup的-coup就是cope的意思，cope是那種蓋全身的長袍，recoup就想像是本來因外力造成我們曝露在風險中，recoup就是再把全身包起來，是不是很像是補償。recoup後方也是加for。recoup someone for losses。
當法院在描述法律上的賠償時，常會用到一個字recoverable。recoverable原意是可復原的例如$10,500 is recoverable for lost wages。此時的recoverable表示對薪資的裁定賠償金額是10,500元。另外the loss is recoverable by A from B，表示B要負責賠償A的損失。這個表達方式一開始看的時候有點不好懂。不過，從這些例子我們可以再次發現在英文及法律的世界裹賠償及回復原狀是類似的。

reprieve 緩刑
reprieve是延後處罰。-prieve與許多其他字用的字根-prehend原來都是一樣的是抓住的意思。reprieve原來是抓回去，後來轉變成抓回去之間還不用回去的這段時間，變成緩刑。-prehend用在其他字上，像是apprehend或comprehend。
例如：
The prison was sentenced to death but then reprieved.
