cause 目標

cause 比較常見的意義是成因，不過cause也有目標的意思。<I can support a cause that means something to me.>這句例子中的cause就是目標而非成因。

lost cause

是一個失敗的的嘗試。<The project was a lost cause.>就表示我們曾努力過，但是失敗囉。

indemnify 免於傷害

indemnify是使某人免受傷害或損害的意思。常用在法律文件當中。indemnify也有賠償的意思，如果你受到了損害，賠償你一些錢，當然就是使你免於傷害的方式。

indemnify後頭常接的是for或against。舉例來說：
The contract indemnifies him against loss of earnings.
或是
We moved quickly, and the House approved an appropriation of $60,000 to indemnify Hamilton Jordan for his legal fees. —Tip O'Neill in Man of the House, 1987

demn這個字根是傷害，相關的字包括：damage(損害), condemn(責怪)。in-是不會的意思，因此indemnify就是讓人不受損害。condemn被用在心理上的傷害，造成人家心裡上的損害，是一種責怪。

damage這個字在一般用法上叫做損害，但是在法律文件中是賠償金的意思。常見的用法是an award of damages這裹的award也不是獎勵，an award of damages就是賠償。

其他與賠償相關的常用字包括：recompense, recoup, remunerate, requite, satisfy。

satisfy一般我們常用在滿足的意思，事實上satisfy也有賠償的意思。satis-這個字根本意是enough，所以satisfy就是使其足夠，所以不滿足的人變成滿足，有虧損的人得到補償，正是satisfy的原意。

recoup的-coup就是cope的意思，cope是那種蓋全身的長袍，recoup就想像是本來因外力造成我們曝露在風險中，recoup就是再把全身包起來，是不是很像是補償。recoup後方也是加for。recoup someone for losses。

當法院在描述法律上的賠償時，常會用到一個字recoverable。recoverable原意是可復原的例如$10,500 is recoverable for lost wages。此時的recoverable表示對薪資的裁定賠償金額是10,500元。另外the loss is recoverable by A from B，表示B要負責賠償A的損失。這個表達方式一開始看的時候有點不好懂。不過，從這些例子我們可以再次發現在英文及法律的世界裹賠償及回復原狀是類似的。

reprieve 緩刑

reprieve是延後處罰。-prieve與許多其他字用的字根-prehend原來都是一樣的是抓住的意思。reprieve原來是抓回去，後來轉變成抓回去之間還不用回去的這段時間，變成緩刑。-prehend用在其他字上，像是apprehend或comprehend。
