reprieve是延後處罰。-prieve與許多其他字用的字根-prehend原來都是一樣的是抓住的意思。reprieve原來是抓回去，後來轉變成抓回去之間還不用回去的這段時間，變成緩刑。-prehend用在其他字上，像是apprehend或comprehend。
